MFA Representative Aleksander Shchetinin Visits UNECON

On March 31, Saint Petersburg State University of Economics (UNECON) welcomed Alexander Shchetinin, Director of the Department of Latin America (DLA) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.

The meeting was held in preparation for the Forum of the Rectors of Russia and Latin America, that took place in April 2026 in Santiago. Rector Igor Maksimtsev presented the concept of the forum and outlined UNECON’s outlined UNECON’s experience in developing cooperation with Latin American countries.

In his address, Rector of Saint Petersburg State University of Economics Igor Maksimtsev noted: “Russia and the countries of Latin America have significant potential to ensure effective economic cooperation, strengthen energy and food security, and contribute to the development of global markets for energy resources and agricultural products. There are substantial opportunities for joint development of innovative solutions across a wide range of sectors. Shared trajectories of socio-economic development, common cultural and national interests, commitment to the values of education and science, as well as a shared aspiration to strengthen sovereignty and promote a multipolar world order, create a solid foundation for deepening strategic partnership between Russia and Latin America. These factors, alongside the exchange of advanced knowledge and technologies, contribute to coordinated efforts in sustainable development, promising sectors of the economy, and humanitarian projects, thereby fostering mutually beneficial cooperation on the global stage.”

Igor Maksimtsev also emphasized UNECON’s positive experience in building academic partnerships with universities in the region, particularly through joint educational projects with Bernardo O’Higgins University.

During the meeting, Alexander Shchetinin provided an overview of current economic and political situation in Latin America and discussed the development of Russian–Chilean relations.  He highlighted opportunities for expanding business, cultural, and educational cooperation and stressed the importance of strengthening academic partnerships. The initiative to hold the forum in Santiago received his full support.
