On March 18, Saint Petersburg State University of Economics (UNECON) welcomed a delegation from Renmin University of China headed by Party Secretary Professor Zhang Donggang.
Cooperation between the two universities dates back to 2002, when the First Forum of Leading Economists of Russia and China was first held. Since then, the forum has been organized biennially, hosted alternately on the campuses of the two universities. Over nearly a quarter of a century, this partnership has developed into a multifaceted collaboration encompassing academic and research cooperation, joint conferences and seminars, as well as student and faculty mobility.
Rector of Saint Petersburg State University of Economics Igor Maksimtsev ehighlighted the long-standing nature of the partnership, noting the high level of ongoing joint projects and emphasizing the importance of further strengthening cooperation across all areas within the framework of the Cross Years of Russian–Chinese Cooperation in Education (2026–2027).
Mr. Zhang Donggang expressed his sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and reflected on the historical contribution of Soviet specialists to the establishment and development of Renmin University. He also elaborated on a proposal to establish a joint Institute of Energy, aimed at training highly qualified professionals, advancing research, and creating an expert platform for dialogue and joint decision-making.
Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs Elena Gorbashko introduced key upcoming events at UNECON, including the 11th Forum of Leading Economists of Russia and China, the Second Russia-China Energy Dialogue, and the international conference National Concept of Quality, all scheduled for autumn 2026. She invited partners from China to participate in these events and to further develop joint research in the field of standardization and quality management, where both universities have significant expertise.
The visit concluded with the signing of an agreement on a double-degree master’s program. In 2027, the partner universities will mark 25 years of cooperation with an extensive program of joint activities.
