UNECON Hosts International Maslenitsa Celebration

On February 19, Saint Petersburg State University of Economics (UNECON) celebrated Maslenitsa, hosting an open cultural event designed to introduce international students to Russian folk traditions and strengthen intercultural connections.

The celebration brought together around 50 students from various countries including China, Vietnam, Mongolia, Turkey, Guinea, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Sudan, Morocco, and many others.

The guests enjoyed a lively program highlighted by a spirited performance by the Ensemble of the Cossack Song “Sakma”, who brought traditional Russian dances and songs to life, showcasing the richness and versatility of Russian culture.

Traditional Maslenitsa treats were a highlight of the celebration – guests sampled the festival’s iconic blinis (pancakes) and joined in folk games like “Hvosty” (“Tails”), “Pryanichnaya doska” (“Gingerbread Board”) and did a round dance that united everyone in the joyful spirit of the holiday.

Maslenitsa is one of Russia’s most colorful and cherished folk celebrations. Cheerful spirits, funny games, music, and dances brought students from many countries together, as they shared joy and excitement looking forward to the coming of spring.
